Drone Batteries for FPV & Custom Drones

The right drone battery has a direct impact on your drone's power, flight time, weight and overall performance. For FPV drones, the battery needs to match the electrical requirements of the motors, ESC, flight controller and overall build.

At Fishnchipzzz, you can find batteries for different FPV drone configurations and flying requirements. When choosing a battery, look beyond the drone battery price and compare important specifications such as cell count, voltage, capacity, discharge capability, connector type and weight.

Understanding Drone Battery Voltage

FPV drones commonly use LiPo batteries, with the number of cells represented by an S rating.

For example:

1S = 3.7V nominal
2S = 7.4V nominal
3S = 11.1V nominal
4S = 14.8V nominal
6S = 22.2V nominal

A fully charged standard LiPo cell reaches 4.2V, so a 4S battery reaches 16.8V when fully charged, while a 6S battery reaches 25.2V.

The correct voltage depends on your drone's electronics and motor setup. You should never select a battery only because it offers more voltage. Your ESC, motors and other components must be rated for the battery you intend to use.

What Does mAh Mean?

Battery capacity is measured in mAh (milliamp-hours).

A higher mAh rating generally means the battery can store more energy, but it also usually means a larger and heavier battery. That extra weight can affect acceleration, handling and efficiency.

This creates an important trade-off when choosing an FPV battery:

Higher capacity → potentially longer flight time, but more weight.

Lower capacity → lighter drone and more agile handling, but potentially shorter flight time.

For this reason, the largest battery isn't automatically the best battery for every drone. Battery capacity should be selected according to the drone's size, power requirements and intended flying style.

What Is Battery C Rating?

The C rating is intended to indicate how much current a battery can deliver relative to its capacity.

A simplified calculation is:

Maximum current ≈ Capacity × C rating

For example, a theoretical 1500mAh battery with a 100C rating would give:

1.5Ah × 100C = 150A

However, C-rating numbers should not be treated as an absolute performance guarantee. Manufacturer ratings can vary, and modern battery testing shows that advertised C ratings are often not directly comparable between brands. Actual voltage sag, internal resistance and battery quality are also important factors.

Choosing the Right FPV Battery

The correct FPV drone battery depends on your complete setup.

Before buying, check:

Cell count: Make sure the battery voltage matches what your electronics support.
Capacity: Choose an appropriate mAh rating without adding unnecessary weight.
C rating: Consider the current demands of your motors and propellers.
Connector: Check whether your drone uses XT30, XT60 or another connector.
Size: Make sure the battery physically fits your frame and battery strap.
Weight: A heavier battery can increase flight time but can also make the drone less agile.
Flying style: Racing, freestyle, cinematic and long-range builds can have different battery requirements.

For example, 5-inch FPV drones commonly use 4S or 6S packs, but the appropriate capacity varies with the particular build. Current FPV battery guides commonly list around 1300–1800mAh for 4S 5-inch setups and around 900–1300mAh for 6S 5-inch setups as general ranges—not universal rules.

LiPo vs LiHV vs Li-Ion

Different battery chemistries can be useful for different types of drones.

LiPo batteries are the standard choice for many racing and freestyle FPV drones because they can provide high current output while keeping weight relatively low.

LiHV batteries are a type of lithium polymer battery designed for a higher charging voltage per cell. They can be useful in compatible applications, but the charger and equipment must support the battery type correctly.

Li-Ion batteries can offer high capacity for their weight and are commonly considered for long-range applications where sustained current demand is lower. They generally aren't the first choice for aggressive racing or freestyle builds because of their lower high-current discharge capability compared with typical FPV LiPo packs.

XT30 vs XT60 Battery Connectors

The connector is another important part of battery selection.

XT30 is commonly found on smaller FPV drones where a compact, lightweight connector is useful.

XT60 is commonly used on larger FPV drones, including many 5-inch and bigger builds.

Always match the battery connector with your drone's power lead. If the connector doesn't match, don't assume an adapter is automatically the best solution—make sure the resulting connection is appropriate for the current requirements of the build.

Don't Choose a Drone Battery Only by Price

When comparing drone battery price, it can be tempting to choose the cheapest battery with the same voltage and capacity.

But two batteries with the same 6S 1300mAh label can behave differently under load.

Battery construction, internal resistance, actual discharge performance, weight and manufacturing quality can all affect how the pack performs in an FPV drone. Higher internal resistance can cause greater voltage sag under load, reducing available motor performance and increasing stress on the battery.

So instead of asking only:

What is the cheapest drone battery?

it's better to ask:

Which battery matches my drone's voltage, current demand, weight and flying style?

Battery Safety & Charging

LiPo batteries require careful handling. Never use a battery that is visibly swollen, physically damaged or has a suspected dead cell.

Use a charger designed for the battery chemistry and cell count, and use the balance connector when balance charging multi-cell LiPo packs. Balance charging allows the charger to monitor and equalize the individual cells.

For storage, LiPo batteries should not be left fully charged for extended periods. Using the appropriate storage-charge function on a compatible charger can help reduce unnecessary battery degradation.

During flight, monitor battery voltage rather than waiting until the battery is completely depleted. A commonly used FPV guideline is to land around 3.5V per cell under typical conditions, rather than repeatedly pushing the battery to very low voltage.

Find the Right Drone Battery

Whether you're building a new FPV drone, replacing an old pack or looking for a battery upgrade, choosing the correct specifications is more important than simply choosing the highest capacity or the lowest drone battery price.
