FPV Controllers & Receivers

A reliable radio link is essential for controlling an FPV drone. The FPV controller sends your stick and switch commands to the aircraft, while the receiver installed on the drone receives those commands and passes them to the flight controller.

At Fishnchipzzz, you can find FPV radio controllers and receivers for different FPV setups, including popular ExpressLRS-based systems. Whether you're buying your first radio, upgrading your existing controller or adding a receiver to a new drone build, choosing compatible transmitter and receiver hardware is an important part of the setup.

What Is an FPV Controller?

An FPV controller, also called a radio transmitter or radio controller, is the device you hold while flying your drone. Your stick movements are converted into control commands and transmitted wirelessly to the receiver on the drone.

Modern FPV radios are available in different sizes and designs. Some use a traditional full-size layout, while compact gamepad-style radios are designed to be easier to carry and handle. The right choice depends on your preferred grip, gimbal feel, switches, features and overall flying style.

When choosing an FPV drone controller, look at:

Radio protocol
Frequency
Internal or external RF module
Gimbal quality and feel
Number and position of switches
Ergonomics
Display and controls
Battery system
Firmware support
Compatibility with your receiver

For many modern FPV pilots, ExpressLRS (ELRS) is a popular choice because of its performance, open ecosystem and wide selection of compatible hardware.

What Is an FPV Receiver?

The FPV receiver is installed on the drone. Its job is to receive commands from your radio controller and send the control data to the flight controller.

For example, if you move the throttle stick on your radio, the transmitter sends that command through the radio link. The receiver on the drone receives it and passes the information to the flight controller, which then controls the motors.

The receiver therefore needs to be compatible with the radio system being used.

For an ExpressLRS setup, for example, the transmitter and receiver need to support compatible ELRS hardware and configuration. Different ELRS manufacturers can generally work together within the same supported ecosystem, but frequency and feature compatibility still need to be checked.

ExpressLRS Controllers & Receivers

ExpressLRS, commonly called ELRS, has become one of the most widely used radio systems in modern FPV. It is available in different frequency bands, including 2.4GHz and 868/915MHz, depending on the hardware and region.

2.4GHz systems are particularly popular for FPV because the hardware can be compact while providing strong range and high packet-rate options. 900MHz-class systems can be useful for applications where longer-range characteristics are important.

However, don't choose a receiver based only on frequency.

You should also check:

Transmitter compatibility
Frequency band
Antenna configuration
Receiver size
Receiver weight
UART or other connection requirements
Telemetry support
Diversity features
Firmware compatibility

Single-Antenna vs Diversity Receivers

FPV receivers are available with different antenna configurations.

A basic receiver may use a single antenna, while diversity receivers can use two antennas to improve link reliability in situations where antenna orientation or multipath interference can affect the signal.

There are also different types of diversity implementations. Some receivers use one RF chain with two antennas, while true diversity receivers use two independent RF chains. These designs can behave differently and should not be treated as identical simply because both have two antennas.

For compact FPV builds, a small single-antenna receiver may be ideal when saving weight and space is important. For larger or longer-range builds, a diversity receiver may be worth considering depending on the requirements of the aircraft.

Choosing an FPV Controller and Receiver

Your controller and receiver work as a pair, so compatibility should be checked before purchasing.

1. Choose the Radio System

First decide which radio ecosystem you want to use. ExpressLRS is a common option for modern FPV, but other systems are also available.

2. Check the Frequency

Make sure your controller and receiver operate on compatible frequency hardware, such as 2.4GHz or the appropriate 900MHz band.

3. Check Receiver Size

Tiny FPV drones have very limited space, so a compact receiver can make installation easier.

Larger freestyle, long-range or custom builds may have more room for receivers with larger antennas or diversity hardware.

4. Check the Connection

Most FPV receivers connect to the flight controller using a serial connection such as a UART. Check the receiver's wiring and required interface before installing it.

5. Consider Antenna Configuration

Think about how the receiver antenna will be positioned on your frame. Good antenna placement matters because the drone's orientation can change significantly during FPV flight.

6. Check Firmware Compatibility

Radio systems such as ELRS continue to receive firmware updates. Make sure the transmitter and receiver are running compatible firmware and are configured correctly before flying.

Binding Your FPV Controller and Receiver

Before the controller can operate the drone, the transmitter and receiver need to establish a connection.

This process is commonly called binding.

With ExpressLRS, modern hardware can use a binding phrase, while other binding methods are also available depending on the receiver and firmware. Once configured correctly, the transmitter and receiver can establish the radio link when powered on.

Always configure and test the radio system before your first flight.

FPV Controllers for Different Pilots

Different pilots have different preferences.

A compact FPV radio controller can be convenient for pilots who travel frequently or prefer a gamepad-style grip. Full-size radios provide more physical space for switches, controls and larger gimbals.

For beginners, a good approach is to choose a controller from a supported ecosystem that you can continue using as you build more drones. Since each drone requires a compatible receiver, the availability and cost of receivers should also be considered when selecting your radio system.
