GPS for FPV Drones

Add GPS positioning to your FPV build with our collection of GPS for drones and compact GPS modules designed for FPV quads, long-range drones and custom multirotor platforms. A GPS module can provide your flight controller with location, speed, altitude and satellite information, enabling useful features such as GPS Rescue and position-related flight functions on supported systems.

Whether you're upgrading a 5-inch freestyle quad, building a long-range FPV drone or adding location data to a custom platform, choose a GPS module that matches your flight controller, firmware and available mounting space.

Why Use GPS on an FPV Drone?

A GPS for FPV drone provides the flight controller with information about the aircraft's position and movement. This information can be displayed through the FPV OSD and can also be used by supported flight-control features.

One of the most common reasons FPV pilots install GPS is GPS Rescue. In Betaflight, GPS Rescue can help the drone navigate toward its recorded home position after certain signal-loss situations when properly configured. It should be treated as a safety feature rather than a guaranteed recovery system, and pilots should test it carefully before relying on it.

GPS can also be used for position-related features on compatible firmware. Recent Betaflight versions have expanded GPS-assisted functionality, including Position Hold and improved navigation-related features.

M10 GPS Modules for FPV

Modern M10 GPS modules are popular for FPV applications because they can use multiple GNSS satellite systems, including GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou, depending on the module and configuration.

Current FPV testing shows that M10-based modules generally offer strong performance, while the exact lock time and satellite performance can still vary between models. Module size and antenna size can also affect performance.

For many FPV builds, an M10 GPS is a practical choice when you want a compact module with modern GNSS capability.

Compact GPS for FPV Builds

Size matters when installing GPS on an FPV drone. A larger module can provide advantages in antenna size and reception, but a smaller GPS can be easier to fit on compact frames and adds less weight.

For micro and lightweight builds, compact GPS modules can be useful when mounting space is limited. For larger 5-inch and long-range builds, you may have more room to use a larger module.

The best choice is therefore not simply the smallest GPS available. Consider the available mounting space, weight of the build and expected GPS performance together.

GPS for Long-Range FPV

GPS is particularly useful on long-range FPV drones, where knowing the aircraft's position and having an additional recovery feature can provide valuable situational awareness.

A GPS module can provide position information to the flight controller and FPV OSD, allowing the pilot to monitor information such as satellite count, distance from home, direction to home and GPS coordinates when supported by the flight controller and firmware.

For long-range builds, GPS should be considered part of a broader safety setup rather than the only recovery method.

How to Choose GPS for Your Drone

Before buying a GPS module for your drone, check the following:

GPS Chipset

M8 and M10 are common generations of GPS/GNSS modules used in FPV drones. M10 modules are newer and can provide multi-constellation GNSS support, making them a popular choice for current FPV builds.

Flight Controller Compatibility

The GPS needs to communicate with your flight controller through a suitable UART or other supported interface. Check the FC documentation before installation.

Size and Weight

Measure the available mounting space on your frame before choosing a GPS. A compact module may be preferable for a small FPV drone, while a larger module can be easier to accommodate on a 7-inch or larger build.

Compass / Magnetometer

Some GPS modules include a built-in compass, while others provide GPS positioning without a magnetometer. Whether you need a compass depends on the flight controller, firmware and navigation features you intend to use.

Firmware Support

Check that your flight controller firmware supports the GPS features you want to use. Betaflight currently supports GPS-related functions including Rescue and Position Hold, while other platforms such as iNav offer their own navigation features.

Connecting GPS to an FPV Flight Controller

Most FPV GPS modules communicate with the flight controller through a UART connection. A typical connection uses the flight controller's 5V and GND connections along with TX and RX lines.

For a GPS with a compass, additional I2C connections may be required.

Always follow the wiring diagram provided for your specific GPS and flight controller rather than assuming every module uses the same pinout.

GPS for Different FPV Builds

5-Inch FPV Drones

A GPS can be added to a 5-inch freestyle or long-range build when the frame provides enough space and the flight controller supports the required GPS features.

7-Inch and Long-Range Drones

Larger FPV drones generally have more room for GPS installation and are common candidates for GPS-assisted features, particularly when flying longer distances.

Lightweight FPV Builds

Compact GPS modules can be useful when weight and available mounting space are limited. The trade-off is that extremely small modules may have less antenna area than larger alternatives.
